It had taken all of Chaseâs self-control not to go back and punch that asshole. He hated anyone who made people like Wynter cry, and she had shed way too many tears over that loser.
Chase still remembered catching her in the parking garage at work the day after she had kicked old boy to the curb. Sheâd been sitting in her car, trying to pull herself together enough to head into work. Chase wasnât sure how long he had sat with her, but sheâd been devastated. It didnât matter that she was the one to call it quits.
âBesides wanting to take you to dinner, what did that asshole want?â Chase growled once they were on the dance floor, and he had Wynter against his body.
While trying to get away from Marcella, Chase had saw Wynter come down the stairs, but then he had lost sight of her. When he pushed through the crowd in search of her, heâd seen the back of her body and the way Kobie had been gripping her arm.
âOh, so you heard that,â Wynter said as they swayed to Alicia Keyâs âIf I Ainât Got You.â
She felt so good in his arms, and Chase held her closer. He brushed his mouth against her ear and said, âYeah, I did. Was this your first time seeing him since you guys broke up?â
Wynter nodded. âI couldâve gone the rest of my life without seeing him again, and that wouldâve been all right with me.â She explained how running into him had brought up all of the old feelings and her insecurities.
It was guys like Kobie that had destroyed her trust in men, and if for nothing else, Chase wanted to kick the manâs ass. Too many women got shafted by jerks like him who made it worse for men like Chaseâmen who treasured women and treated them like the queens they were.
Kobie hadnât deserved Wynter in the first place. Chase had known she was special from day one, which was one of many reasons why he hadnât pursued her. Sheâd been too sweet and innocent for the likes of him. Now that he had grown up and knew that she was the one for him, it was going to be up to him to show her how a real man treats a woman.
âOkay, letâs not ruin this dance by talking more about him,â she said.
âFine with me. This is our first dance, and when weâre married for twenty years, and youâ¦â
Wynter punched him in the shoulder, and he dropped his arms from around her.
âOw. What was that for?â He laughed and pulled her back into his arms where she belonged.
âNo talk about dating or marriage. Letâs just dance.â
She was gazing up at him, and Chase had the strongest urge to kiss her. Those gorgeous red lips were begging for him to taste them, but right now, he would enjoy having her curvy body pressed against him. Heâd held her close plenty of times, but there was definitely something different about this charged moment.
